Tate was born in Chicago, where his father Emory Andrew Tate Sr. was a prominent attorney. He learned to play chess as a child. He served in the United States Air Force as a sergeant, where his language skills were invaluable. His son said, “The military taught him, Russian. He picked up Spanish and German by accident. He had three children with his English wife; following the break up of their marriage she moved back to the UK with the children.
