Ernest Augustus was born on 5 June 1771 in Buckingham House, London, England in the Kingdom of Great Britain. Augustus was the fifth son of King George III of the United Kingdom and Hanover and his wife Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

On 20 June 1837, Ernest Augustus was made the king of Hanover, which he reigned from that day until his death in the year 1851. King Augustus became the King of Hanover under Salic law.

Ernest Augustus was married to Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz from 1815 until she died in the year 1841. King Augustus, together with Frederica, had a son who was named George V of Hanover.

Ernest Augustus passed away on 18 November 1851 in Hanover at the age of eighty (80) years old. King Augustus was known to have died of an illness he battled for a month but the kind of illness is not known at the moment. King Augustus was buried at Herrenhausen Gardens, Hanover. King Augustus was succeeded by his son, George V.
