On Friday, April 6, 1924, Eugenio Scalfari was born. He worked as a journalist in Italy. Scalfari, a law graduate with a passion for journalism and politics, worked for the important postwar periodicals Il Mondo and L’Europeo. He participated in the founding of the Radical Party in 1955.
He and Arrigo Benedetti co-founded one of Italy’s leading newsmagazines, L’Espresso, in October 1955 with funding provided by progressive industrialist Adriano Olivetti, the creator of Olivetti typewriters.
The first editor-in-chief position was held by the seasoned Benedetti until 1963 when he turned the reins over to Scalfari after directing the newsmagazine L’Europeo (1945–54).
In a joint venture with Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, the Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso also debuted the center-left daily newspaper La Repubblica in January 1976. Scalfari was appointed editor-in-chief and held the position through 1996.
Few people thought that such an endeavour would be successful in the competitive Italian newspaper market, but La Repubblica flourished under the able editorship of Scalfari, rivalling the famed Corriere Della Sera in terms of sales and stature as a national daily.
