In 1955, Eugenio co-founded one of Italy’s foremost magazines L’Espresso. Following the success of the first magazine, he went on to launch a daily newspaper La Repubblica in 1976.
He was editor-in-chief of the newspaper till 1996. The newspaper was known for uncovering illegal right-wing activities and major government cover-ups
Scalfari called himself an Italian Fascist before the second world war. In 1956, he co-founded the Radical Party. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies where he served till 1972.

Eugenio Scalfari died in Rome on July 14, 2022, at the age of 98. His family has not officially disclosed the cause of death but Scalfari’s health had begin to decline over the years.
