As a journalist, he was the editor for the Italian-based news magazine L’Espresso and La Repubblica. As an atheist, Pope Francis gave him a thorough explanation of atheism and forgiveness in 2013.
On July 14, 2022, Scalfari passed away at the age of 98 in Rome, Italy.
