Filep Jacob Semuel Karma was a West Papua independence campaigner. Filep Jacob Semuel Karma was born on 14th August 1959 and passed away on 1st November 2022. Filep Karma assisted in raising the Morning Star flag during a ceremony in Jayapura on December 1, 2004, which led to a treason charge and a fifteen-year prison sentence. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have voiced their opposition on his behalf, with the former referring to him as a “prisoner of conscience.” On November 19, 2015, Karma was released.

Filep Karma was born in Dutch New Guinea’s Jayapura and grew up in a wealthy household involved in local politics. Karma’s cousin Constant Karma was the deputy governor of Papua, and his father Andreas Karma was a civil officer with Dutch education who had remained employed by the Indonesian government after the country’s independence and served as a regent of Wamena and Serui.
Two of Filep Karma’s relatives from Biak who were visiting were mistaken for his uncles Sam Karma and Jan Pieter Karma, colonels for OPM, during a raid by Indonesian soldiers at midnight that resulted in the destruction of the family’s furniture due to a false tip.
