Frenkie de Jong began his football career in the village where he was born, Arkel. At six years of age, his father registered him with the amateur club ASV Arkel.At eight years of age, De Jong was scouted by the professional football club Willem II. He switched to the Tilburg club, where he went through the shared youth academy of Willem II and RKC.
On 1 August 2013, De Jong signed, at sixteen years of age, his first professional contract with Willem II. On 10 May 2015, two days before his eighteenth birthday, De Jong made his official professional debut for Willem II, with a substitution in the home game against ADO Den Haag. In August of that year, he signed a contract with Ajax.
At Ajax, he quickly established himself as one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe. His remarkable achievements included securing a domestic double and reaching the semi-finals of the prestigious Champions League. De Jong’s contributions were pivotal in Ajax’s first appearance in the Champions League semi-finals in 22 years during the breakthrough 2018-19 season.
He clinched the Eredivisie title, the KNVB Cup, and was named Eredivisie Player of the Season. In January 2019, De Jong agreed to join Barcelona, and in July of the same year, he officially signed with the club for a staggering fee of €75 million. His exceptional talent was recognized when he was selected for the 2019 FIFA FIFPro World11, making him one of the three Dutch players to achieve this honor in the past five years.
De Jong made his debut for the senior national team of the Netherlands in September 2018. He played a crucial role as a starter in the inaugural UEFA Nations League, where the Netherlands finished as runners-up. Additionally, he represented his country in both the UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
De Jong has represented the Netherlands under-19 team on eight occasions, making his debut against Russia on 7 July 2015. At the under-21 level, he has featured in six matches and managed to score one goal for the Netherlands.
