The importance of vacations in our daily lives cannot be overstated. They allow people to unwind and re-energize in preparation for the responsibilities ahead. It’s beneficial to be aware of these days ahead of time so that you can plan your calendar accordingly.

Here, we will guide you to all 2022 Public Holidays in Ghana including public holidays and regional holidays.

This page contains a national calendar of all 2022 public holidays for Ghana (Statutory Public Holidays and Commemorative Days in the Republic of Ghana for the year 2022). These dates may be modified as official changes are announced, so please check back regularly for updates.

Ghana will have a total of 13 public holidays in 2022, with Constitution Day falling on 7th January and Founders’ Day on 4th August. Two new public holidays have been added which are Founders’ day and New Year’s Day which falls on 1st January.

Statutory Public Holidays

1. New Year’s Day – Saturday,1st January

According to the Ghanaian calendar, this is Ghana’s first public holiday in 2022. In Ghana, the New Year is usually celebrated with fireworks and other activities. On January 1, there will be no official state celebration to mark the occasion. The New Year’s Day is usually designated as a public holiday, which is known as a universal public holiday.

2. Constitution Day – Friday, 7th January

Constitution Day is observed on the 27th of December to celebrate the introduction of the current constitution. The day will be honored as a public holiday every year from January 7, 2022, until the new constitution takes effect in 2023.

3. Independence Day – Sunday, 6th March

The Independence Day is the most important public holiday in Ghana. It celebrates the day Ghana gained independence from the British Empire. The day also includes a state function, whose main highlight is a speech by the President of Ghana.

4. Good Friday – Friday, 15th April

Good Friday is a Christian holy day and marks the death of Jesus Christ. Good Friday forms part of the Easter holiday and is generally the celebration of the honoring the death of Jesus Christ. The 2022 Easter Friday will fall on April 15th, with Good Friday falling on April 15th.

5. Easter Monday – Monday, 18th April

Easter Monday is a national holiday with no official state function. It occurs following Easter Sunday and celebrates Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

6. May Day (Workers’ Day) – Sunday, 1st May

The 1st of May is observed around the world as a day to honor those who labor. In many nations around the world, the day is also known as Labor Day. In Ghana, this day has been designated as a public holiday, as well as a national holiday in several other sections of the country.

7. Eid-UI-Fitr

The Eid-Ul-Fitr is an Islamic holiday which marks the end of Ramadan and is celebrated in many countries around the world. Ghana also has a sizeable number of Muslims in its population. It is scheduled to hold on May 2, however, it is subject to the visibility of the moon.

8. Eid-UI-Adha

Eid-Ul-Adha is the second-most-important holiday in the Islamic calendar. It marks the willingness of prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his youngest son. The date for this holiday usually varies from year to year, depending on the lunar inclinations.

9. Founder’s Day – Thursday, 4th August

This public holiday falls on the birthday of former president Kwame Nkrumah, a great African personality who helped Ghana achieve its independence and one of its founding fathers. Kwame Nkrumah died on April 27, 1972, in Bucharest, Romania. He was the first prime minister and president of the Republic of Ghana. Born on September 1, 1909, in Nkroful, he died a few hours after independence from Britain.

10. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day – Wednesday, 21st September

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day is a public holiday in Ghana. It marks the birth anniversary of the first prime minister and president of Ghana. This year’s anniversary will be observed on Tuesday, September 21st.

11. Farmer’s Day – Friday, 2nd December

Ghana’s Farmer’s Day is celebrated every year on the first Friday in December. This national holiday is set aside specially to honour farmers in Ghana. The national government usually announces its agricultural plans during this day and unveils ways to make cultivation of plants and rearing of animals better.

12. Christmas Day – Sunday, 25th December

December 25 is a universal public holiday set aside to mark the anniversary of Jesus Christ’s birth. Ghanaians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on this day. It is typically a day of joy and merrymaking, with numerous activities taking place across the country. While some people prefer to stay at home and greet visitors, friends, and loved ones, others prefer to visit event centers, funfairs, entertainment venues, and other locations.

13. Boxing Day – Monday, 26th December

It is yet another public holiday on the Ghanaian calendar. Boxing Day is traditionally observed a day after Christmas around the world. It is a day when Ghanaians give back to those who are less fortunate. The enjoyment and liveliness of the Christmas season frequently cloud the atmosphere.

NB: There are no fixed dates for the Eid-UI-Fitr and Eid-UI-Adha because they are removable feasts. The dates for their observation are provided by the Office of the Chief Imam in the course of the year.

Commemorative Days

1. African Union Day – Wednesday, 25th May

On Tuesday 25th May, African governments would commemorate what is known as “Africa Day”. The day (formerly known as African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 5 May 1963

2. Republic Day – Friday, 1st July

Republic day is a national holiday in Ghana and is celebrated on 1st July. This marks the anniversary of Ghana becoming a republic on 1 July 1960. Until 2019, Republic Day was a public holiday, but under the Public Holiday Amendment Bill, it now becomes a commemorative day.

Note: Commemorative days would not be observed as public holidays
