He was born on 22 May 1878 in Jabbowal Village, Amritsar District, Punjab Province, British India. Ghulam Mohammed Baksh Butt was his Birth name.
He came into the limelight at the age of 10 when he entered a strongman competition held in Jodhpur. He was named the winner by Maharaja of Jodhpur because of his young age.
He had five sons and four daughters.
