Delmer Lloyd Busey, a manager of building design, and Sadie Virginia (née Arnett), a housewife, are Gary Busey’s parents. They both reside in Goose Creek, Texas, where Busey was born. Busey moved to Tulsa while he was in the fourth grade, leaving Goose Creek. Before transferring to Nathan Hale High School, where he eventually obtained his graduation, Gary Busey later attended Bell Junior High School nearby.
Busey attended Coffeyville Community College before going on a football scholarship to Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. There, he first became interested in acting. After sustaining a knee injury, Gary Busey transferred schools and enrolled at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma to study theater. He later dropped out with only one course left to complete his degree.
