She received the 2015 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the BBC television movie Marvellous (2014). Jones, the daughter of actor Griffith Jones and Irene (née Isaac; 1911–1985), was born in Marylebone (1909–2007). Nicholas Jones, her brother, is also an actor. She received the gold medal while studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
In 1965, Gemma Jones played Anya in The Cherry Orchard at Nottingham Playhouse. She performed at the Old Vic Theatre in 1986 as the singer Giuseppina Strepponi in the drama After Aida. After playing Queen Elizabeth I in the 1967 BBC series Kenilworth and in the 1970 BBC 2 dramatization of The Spoils of Poynton, Jones gained notoriety among television audiences.

Jones, the younger brother of the actress Gemma Jones, was born in London. They are the offspring of Robin Isaac and actor Griffith Jones (1909–2007). Attended Westminster School for his education.
Jones has had an illustrious career, portraying leading roles on stage in West End productions, at The National Theatre, and on television. Along with performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company (1999), he continued his father’s legacy by becoming a star at Shakespeare’s Globe. In 1970, he played Laertes alongside Richard Chamberlain’s Hamlet in one of his earliest on-screen appearances.
