George Denis Patrick Carlin was an American stand-up comedian, actor, author, and social critic who died on June 22, 2008 (Carlin was born on May 12, 1937). Carlin was referred to as “the dean of counterculture comedians” and is regarded as one of the most significant and influential stand-up comedians of all time. Jack Burns was a fellow DJ at radio station KXOL in Fort Worth, Texas, where Carlin first met him in 1959. They established a comedy team, and in February 1960, Burns and Carlin left for California after giving successful performances at Fort Worth’s hip coffeehouse, The Cellar.
The Wright Brothers, a morning show on KDAY in Hollywood, was created by Burns and Carlin a few weeks after they relocated to California. They developed their material in late-night beatnik coffee shops while they worked at KDAY. When Carlin received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame years later, he asked that it be positioned in front of the KDAY studios near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street.
Burns and Carlin recorded their sole album, Burns and Carlin at the Playboy Club Tonight, at Cosmo Alley in Hollywood in May 1960. They split up after two years as a team to pursue individual careers, but “remained the best of friends.”

The comedy of Carlin’s older brother Patrick Carlin Jr, who later had a significant impact on Carlin’s career, was humorous. Carlin later referred to himself as “fully Irish” because his mother was an Irish immigrant who was born in New York City and his father was an Irish immigrant from Cloghan, a village in County Donegal in Ulster.
