The American actor George Peppard was born on October 1st, 1928. Detroit is the place of birth of George William Peppard Jr. George was the son of opera singer Vernelle Rohrer and builder George Peppard, Sr.

He co-starred with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), playing struggling author Paul Varjak. Then, he played a character that resembled Howard Hughes in The Carpetbaggers (1964).

In the early 1970s television mystery series Banacek, he played the title character, rich insurance investigator and detective Thomas Banacek. In the 1980s action movie The A-Team, he portrayed Col. John “Hannibal” Smith, the cigar-smoking commander of an outlaw commando force.

At the Pittsburgh Playhouse in 1949, Peppard made his theatrical debut. Peppard relocated and joined the Actors Studio in New York City, where he was taught the Method by Lee Strasberg.

He worked as a mechanic, disc jockey, radio station engineer, fencing instructor, taxi driver, and other jobs throughout this time to help support himself.

He performed in summer stock in New England in addition to two seasons at the outdoor Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon.
