Russell grew up in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and attended Wisbech Grammar School before relocating to Milton Keynes at the age of 18 to be closer to his racing teams.
Russell advanced to Formula Three in 2015, racing with Carlin in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship. He won his first race of the season at Silverstone, finishing ahead of fellow rookies Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi in the second race of the weekend.
