The first transgender person to hold the office of Mayor and MP was Georgina Beyer. Beyer won the election for mayor of Carterton in 1995, was re-elected in 1998 and was elected to the Carterton District Council in 1993.

With the largest swing in New Zealand that year, she defeated broadcaster Paul Henry in the Wairarapa district where Labour nominated her as its candidate for the 1999 election.

Georgina Beyer later joined the Labour-Alliance coalition government as a backbencher. Georgina was additionally re-elected in 2002, and from 2005 until her retirement in 2007, she worked as a list MP.
