Georgina Beyer MNZM JP, a New Zealand politician and Labor Party member who was elected mayor of Carterton in 1995, became the first openly transgender mayor in history.

Beyer noted in her inauguration speech that she was the first transgender politician and that New Zealand had been a world leader in granting women the right to vote.

She desires that New Zealand continue to set higher standards for social policy and human rights, particularly LGBT rights, which she fervently supported during her eight years in parliament.

In the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours, the late politician was awarded a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to LGBTIQA+ rights. Her book “Change for the Better” was published by Random House in October 1999.

End-stage renal failure was discovered in Georgina Beyer in 2013, and on March 6, 2023, she passed away in Wellington’s Mary Potter Hospice. She had a 65-year-old age.
