Gotabaya Rajapaksa enlisted in the Sri Lankan army in 1971 after completing his secondary studies at Ananda College in Colombo. He received instruction and coursework in Pakistan, India, and the US. At the University of Madras, he graduated with a master’s in defense studies in 1983. He is a receiver of two military medals for his service.
