Grant Shapps was born on September 14, 1968, in Croxley Green, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, to Beryl and Tony Shapps. His family is Jewish. Andre Shapps, Grant’s brother, is a musician who played keyboards with Big Audio Dynamite (BAD) from 1994 and 1998. Mick Jones, their cousin, was a significant figure in British punk rock in the late 1970s, and a founding member of both the Clash and Big Audio Dynamite. Shapps began his career as a photocopier sales representative. Shapps, at 22, launched PrintHouse Corporation, a design, print, website creation, and marketing firm in London in 1990, based on a failed printing company Grant obtained from the receiver. In 2009, Grant stepped down as a director but remained the biggest shareholder.
In the midst of his cancer treatment, Shapps and his wife established the web publishing company How To Corp Limited. Business software and books were promoted by the corporation. Three individuals, at least, whose existence has been called into question as having offered testimonials for the business. After Shapps resigned as a director in July 2008, his wife continued in that role until the firm was dissolved in 2014.
