Guy Damien Lafleur was born in Thurso, Quebec, on September 20, 1951, to Rejean and Pierette Lafleur. According to his Hockey Hall of Fame biography, he was so enamoured with hockey as a kid that he would sneak into a local arena early on weekday mornings and early on Sunday mornings to gain ice time when no one else was around.

Rejean (a welder) and Pierette Lafleur had five children, and he was the sole son. Lafleur learnt to skate on an outdoor rink created by his father and neighbors in their neighbourhood.

From an early age, Lafleur was enamoured with hockey, to the point where he would sleep in his gear.
