A missile launched by the Hamas militant group struck the Akhmat Kadyrov Mosque outside Jerusalem, in a significant event amid the escalating violence. The mosque is named after Akhmat Kadyrov, a Chechen separatist warrior who switched allegiance to Russia in the 1990s. On Monday, Israel’s foreign ministry verified the occurrence.
The missile from Hamas landed directly on the Akhmat Kadyrov Mosque, Israel’s second-largest mosque. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this attack.
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, the son of Akhmat Kadyrov, inaugurated the mosque in 2014. It is located in the village of Abu Ghosh, and the mosque reportedly cost about $10 million to build, with Chechnya contributing $6 million.
This attack is significant not just because of its impact on the religious place, but also because of its historical setting in Abu Ghosh. Some researchers believe that the current people living in Abu Ghosh are descended from Chechens who migrated to Ottoman Empire regions in the 16th century.
