According to his family, Harry Billinge, one of the first British soldiers to land on Gold Beach in 1944 when he was 18 years old, died at the age of 96 after a brief illness.

Billinge was a sapper with the 44 Royal Engineer Commandos and was one of just four troops from his 10-man unit to survive the landings and battles in France, later fighting in Caen and Normandy’s Falaise pocket.

He relocated to Cornwall and raised almost £50,000 for veterans’ causes, including a national memorial to his fallen comrades. He received the MBE for charity fundraising and the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest accolade, in 2019.
