Harry Lorayne, who transformed a childhood reading disability and the harsh punishment it brought into an international career as a memory expert, died on Friday in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

He was known for his astounding recall of names of large groups of strangers in a single sitting, his ability to rattle off entire small-town phone books, and his ability to tell amazed audiences what was written on any page of any given issue of Time magazine.

Harry Lorayne was 96. His spokeswoman, Skye Wentworth, confirmed his passing away at a hospital but did not provide further details. Harry Lorayne had been a resident of Newburyport, Massachusetts, which is close to Boston.

Mr. Lorayne was a popular television guest and a favorite of Johnny Carson’s, making more than 20 appearances on “The Tonight Show.” Having started out as a sleight-of-hand performer, Mr. Lorayne was considered one of the best card magicians in the nation well into his nineties.
