Griffin, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, carried for 1,787 yards and scored over 170 points in 11 games as a senior fullback at Eastmoor High School in Columbus in 1971. He led Eastmoor to the Columbus City League victory that year, rushing for 267 yards on 31 rushes in the championship game against Linden-McKinley High School.

Griffin signed with Ohio State and started as a tailback for four years, guiding the Buckeyes to a 40-5-1 record and four Big Ten championships between 1972 and 1975.

Griffin was the only player in history to start four consecutive Rose Bowls and was a three-time first-team All-American.
