Herbert Loeb Hutner was born in New York City on December 21, 1908. In 1928, he graduated from Columbia University, and in 1931, he graduated from Columbia Law School.
Herbert began his career in finance, co-founding Osterman & Hutner with Lester Osterman. He then became Chairman of Sleight & Hellmuth Inc., Pressed Metals of America, Struthers Wells Corp., and the Platinum Mining Co. He then became President of the New England Life Insurance Co.
From 1982 until 1990, he was chairman of the President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts, serving under Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.
Herbert donated to the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA and the Young Musicians Foundation. In addition, he was a co-founder of the Los Angeles Music Center.
Herbert was married three times. His second wife was Zsa Zsa Gabor, whom he married on November 5, 1962. They divorced on March 3, 1966. On November 28, 1969, he married Juli Reding, an actress, on her 33rd birthday. He has a son, Jeffrey Hutner, and a daughter, Lynn M. Collwell.
On December 7, 2008, he passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
