Herschel Walker (born March 3, 1962) is a former American football running back who spent 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He is the Republican candidate for Georgia’s United States Senate seat in 2022. At the University of Georgia, where Herschel played football in college, Walker won the Heisman Trophy as a junior. Herschel played for the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL) for the first three years of his professional career, and in 1985, the league’s final year, Herschel won MVP honors.
Walker joined the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys after the USFL folded, earning consecutive Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors from 1987 to 1988. Walker was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 1989, in what is considered one of the most lopsided trades in NFL history and is credited with establishing the Cowboys’ 1990s dynasty. Herschel later played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants before returning to the Cowboys for a second stint. In 1999, Walker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Walker was a member of the US bobsleigh team at the 1992 Winter Olympics and competed in mixed martial arts (MMA) fights with Strikeforce from 2010 to 2011. Herschel served on President Donald Trump’s President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition from 2018 to 2020. Walker ran his first political campaign in Georgia’s Senate race in 2022, winning the Republican nomination with 68% of the vote. In the general election, Walker will face Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock.
