Robert Neil Baun, who was born on September 9, 1936, and died on August 15, 2023, was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman who played in the National Hockey League for 17 seasons from 1956 to 1973. “Boomer” was his nickname.
Robert Neil played junior hockey with the Toronto Marlboros of the Ontario Hockey Association from 1952 to 1956, winning the Memorial Cup in 1955 and 1956.
After turning professional, Robert spent the most of the 1956–57 season with the Rochester Americans, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ American Hockey League club.
Bobby retired as a player and ran a cattle farm, but three years later, he was hired as the head coach of the World Hockey Association’s Toronto Toros.
On June 1, 2007, Baun received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology for his contributions both on and off the rink. He was from Ajax, Ontario.
Baun was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
