Legendary Ethiopian pianist and composer Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou dedicated the majority of her life to pursue her love of music. Ten years later, she made her way back to Ethiopia, where she served Haile Selassie as a vocalist and a civil worker.

Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou established the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Foundation in 2004, which offers music instruction to underprivileged kids in Africa and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region.

She and her family were detained by the Italians and transferred to prison camps during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War. Emahoy resumed her musical training with a Polish violinist in Cairo after the war, and she ultimately made her way back to Ethiopia.

Her distinct playing technique enthralled people all over the world. Her songs have been compared to a blend of blues piano with rhythmically intricate phrasing.

Also, her music has been featured in movies and commercials, such as Amazon’s “Coming Home” campaign and the documentary “Time.”
