Georgina Beyer MNZM JP was a New Zealand Labour Party politician who was a member of parliament from November 1957 to March 203. She became the first openly transgender mayor in the world when she was elected mayor of Carterton in 1995.
She became the first openly transgender member of parliament in the world in 1999. Beyer was a Labour Party member who advocated for progressive policies like the promotion of Mori rights, civil unions, anti-discrimination laws, and reform of the law governing prostitution.
She was named after her grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel George Bertrand, who was second in command of the Mori Battalion. She was born in 1957 at Wellington Hospital to Noeline (née Tamati) and Jack Bertrand. She was given the name “male” at birth.
When she was born, her parents were living in Hataitai. She belonged to the European and Mori (Te ti Awa, Ngti Mutunga, Ngti Raukawa, and Ngti Porou) families. In December 1958, her mother gave birth to a second child with her first husband, who was given up for adoption. During this second pregnancy, Beyer was sent to live with her grandparents on their farm in Taranaki. By 1962, her parents had split up.
