The Labor Party’s John Charles Kerin was an Australian politician and economist. From 1972 to 1975 and 1978 to 1993, he was a member of the House of Representatives twice. He raised chickens and graduated from the University of New England in Armidale with a bachelor’s degree in arts in 1967.

Kerin held a number of prominent ministerial positions during both the Hawke and Keating administrations, including six months as Australia’s Treasurer. Additionally, Kerin held the position of Minister for Primary Industries and Energy for eight years, which is the longest in the history of Australia.

Since leaving politics, Mr. Kerin has worked for CSIRO, the Poultry Cooperative Research Centre, the Australian Weed Research Centre, the CRC for Tropical Savannas Management, and UNICEF Australia.
