In May 1970 in Rome, he faced Mexican Vicente Saldivar to defend his WBC title, and he triumphed in 56 of his 67 professional contests. His accomplishments are still highly regarded, and the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame upgraded Famechon to Legend status in 2012.

In 1997, he was also admitted to the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

 

How did Johnny Famechon die?

According to several sources, former Australian Hall of Famer Johnny Famechon, died in Melbourne after suffering from a lengthy illness. He was 77 years old at the time of his death. The unfortunate news was released by the Sport Australia Hall of Fame on August 4, 2022.
In a tribute post, former French champion Jeff Fenech said, “He never failed to send me a Christmas card and every time I saw him we would laugh and joke. He was such a beautiful man. On top of his legendary boxing record as a human he was second to none.”
