Malcolm James McCormick was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Point Breeze neighbourhood on January 19, 1992. He was the son of photographer Karen Meyers and architect Mark McCormick and had an older brother by the name of Miller. He has a Jewish mother and a Christian father. He and his brother were raised Jews, but he went to a Catholic elementary school to “guarantee a decent education and the opportunity to play football and lacrosse.”

Miller debuted on the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene in 2007 at the age of fifteen. In 2010, he signed a record deal with the independent label Rostrum Records, which allowed him to release the ground-breaking mixtapes K.I.D.S. (2010) and Best Day Ever (2011). (2011). For the first time since 1995, Miller’s debut studio album, Blue Slide Park, debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200.

In 2013, he created the record label imprint REMember Music. He quit Rostrum after releasing Watching Movies with the Sound Off (2013) and joined the major label Warner Bros. Records in 2014.

His four studio albums with them were GO: OD AM (2015), The Divine Feminine (2016), Swimming (2018), and the posthumous Circles (2020). After his death, he was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album for Swimming. He also worked as a record producer for several musicians, including himself, using the nickname Larry Fisherman.

In September 2018, Miller was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles residence. According to the Los Angeles County coroner, Malcolm James McCormick, a well-known rapper and producer, died at age 26 from accidental fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol overdose.
