She portrayed the Oracle in “The Matrix Revolutions” and also appeared in the computer game “Enter the Matrix.”
She played Ellie Grant Hubbard on “All My Children” for two seasons and starred in “A Different World” for two seasons.
She appeared in a number of films, including “Malcolm X,” “The Inkwell,” “Down in the Delta,” “Beat Street,” “To Sleep With Anger,” “Awakenings,” “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” and “Sunshine State.”
She began her stage career in her hometown of Indianola, Mississippi, where she was born Mary Alice Smith.
Alice returned to acting in the 1960s with community theatre and worked her way up to stage shows in Manhattan’s East Village throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s following a brief stint teaching in an elementary school.
She appeared in “The Education of Sonny Carson” in 1974, marking her feature debut, and then appeared on “Police Woman” and “Sanford and Son” as guest stars.
For her work in 1993’s “I’ll Fly Away,” Alice got an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
She also received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1987 for her portrayal in August Wilson’s “Fences.”
Alice was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2000 and retired from acting in 2005.
