Nipsey Hussle, a rapper from Los Angeles, was shot and died on March 31 at the age of 33, and his death rocked his community in LA and others all over the world.

It wasn’t only that he was youthful and well-liked or that he was a father of two and dating Lauren London. Hussle (real name Ermias Asghedom) received praise throughout his life for both his music and his work with the black community.

Even though his contributions to the black community in South LA have received a lot of attention in the days since his passing, most people are unaware of just how extensive his activism and business ventures were:

How did Nipsey Hussle impact the black community?

Hussle reportedly spent several million dollars on a strip mall site between Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue with multiple companies, including his “smart store” Marathon Clothing, in an effort to attract black-owned businesses and jobs to his South LA area.

In February, he revealed to Forbes that he had broader plans for the real estate industry and that his aim was to collaborate with black community leaders in other American cities to establish comparable commercial and real estate hubs that would serve the black community rather than drive it out.

The strategy was a component of a project called Our Opportunity, which Hussle and his business partner Dave Gross co-founded.
