Through the release of classics like Step On, Kinky Afro, and Loose Fit, they went on to have tremendous success in the 1980s and 1990s.
When the band was signed to the city’s famous label Factory Records, his post-funk basslines came to characterize the sound of the Madchester era.
After quitting Mondays, he moved to America and started the band Big Arm in addition to pursuing a career as an actor.
However, he rejoined The Mondays in 2012 for a warmly received comeback tour, reuniting with his brother in the band’s original lineup.
This year, the band went back on tour and performed at festivals all over the UK. On Friday night, they were scheduled to perform at the Kubik Festival in the North East.
“We are all profoundly sorry to learn of the loss of Paul Ryder this morning and our sympathies are with the Ryder family at this terrible time,” the festival wrote in a social media statement on Friday offering condolences to the band.
