Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, passed away on Friday. He was 99 years old and had been Queen Elizabeth II’s consort for 65 years. He also had ties to India.

Philip served in the Indian Ocean as a UK navy officer during World War II, while India was governed by the British. Louis Mountbatten, the final viceroy of India and better known as Lord Mountbatten there, provided a further connection.

How is Louis Mountbatten related to Prince Philip?

Queen Victoria, the great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth, was Lord Mountbatten’s great-grandmother on his mother’s side. Princess Alice of Battenberg, who became the mother of Prince Philip after she wed Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, was his sister.

Mountbatten travelled with Prince Edward, King George VI’s brother when he was younger, and the two quickly became friends.

By George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Edward VII, he was given the title of personal aide-de-camp. The naval commander was the great-uncle of Prince Charles, who referred to him as “the grandfather I never had.”

They had a close bond, and Lord Mountbatten even advised his great-nephew on dating.
