Although Rajapaksa did not attend college during his undergraduate years, he did graduate from Colombo Law College with a degree in law in 1974.

When Rajapaksa, at 24 years old, won the seat his father had resigned just five years earlier, he became Sri Lanka’s youngest-ever member of parliament.

He concentrated on his legal practice after losing the seat in 1977 and returned to Parliament in 1989, serving the Hambantota district (1989–2005).
