Hanks went to New York City in 1979 and made his cinematic debut in the low-budget slasher picture He Knows You’re Alone (1980), as well as a starring role in the television film Mazes and Monsters. Early that year, he was cast as Callimaco in Daniel Southern’s production of Niccol Machiavelli’s The Mandrake at the Riverside Shakespeare Company. Hanks landed one of the lead parts, that of Kip Wilson, on the ABC television pilot of Bosom Buddies the next year. He and Peter Scolari portrayed two young advertising guys who were obliged to masquerade as ladies in order to live in a cheap all-female motel. Hanks and Scolari had previously worked together on the 1970s game program Make Me Laugh.

Hanks relocated to Los Angeles after landing the part. Bosom Buddies aired for two seasons and received excellent marks from television critics despite low viewership. “The first day I saw him on the set,” co-producer Ian Praiser told Rolling Stone, “I thought, ‘Too bad he won’t be in television for long.’ I believed he’d be a movie star in two years.” Praiser, however, was unable to persuade Hanks. “The television program had appeared out of nowhere,” Tom Lizzio, Hanks’ best pal, told Rolling Stone.
