On Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue in South Central, Los Angeles, Nipsey Hussle grew up. The Rollin’ 60s Neighborhood Crips, a gang in whom Nipsey had grown up to become a member, are well known to be connected to the neighborhood. He is an ethnic Eritrean.

Slauson Boy Volume 1, Nipsey’s first mixtape to be recorded, later became the name of his own record company. Before signing with Epic Records, Nipsey released two mixtapes in 2008: Bullets Ain’t Got No Name Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. His first single, “Hussle In The House,” was released in 2009.

He collaborated with Tru’G to release Bullets Ain’t Got No Name Vol. 3, his third mixtape, in 2009. On the tracks “Killer” and “Upside Down” from Snoop Dogg’s album Malice N Wonderland, he collaborated with Drake. South Central State of Mind, a first studio album, was scheduled for release in the summer of 2009 but was never made available; it has since been postponed indefinitely. Instead, The Marathon was made available on December 21, 2010.
