Peter Gregory Obi, a politician and businessman from Nigeria born on July 19, 1961 in Onitsha, held the office of governor of Anambra State twice from 2006 and 2014. He was selected in May 2022 by the Labour Party to represent Nigeria in the 2023 presidential election. The University of Nigeria awarded Obi his degree in 1984. His career in business and finance continued after that, and he finally attained various executive positions at banks. Obi held the role of chairman of Fidelity Bank by the early 2000s before resigning to pursue politics. As a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Obi campaigned for governor in 2003, but the election was illegally proclaimed won by his primary rival.
Obi was proclaimed the victor after three years of court fights, and he took office in March 2006. Then, in November, he was impeached. The impeachment was later thrown out, and in February 2007, he was reinstated. When a fresh election was held in April 2007, Obi was once again removed from office; however, the judges once more stepped in and decided that he should be let to serve out his whole four-year term. He was re-elected to office for a second term in 2010.
