Sports Illustrated named Nichols “the country’s most influential and prominent female sports journalist” in 2014.

In Nichols first position, Nichols covered the Miami Dolphins and University of Miami football team for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. To cover the NHL’s Washington Capitals, Nichols joined The Washington Post in 1996. Later, she expanded into other sports like Major League Baseball, the Olympics, the National Basketball Association, and professional tennis. Early in their careers, Venus and Serena Williams, as well as Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, were all covered by Nichols. When ESPN hired her as a reporter in 2004, Nichols made the switch to broadcasting.
