Alonso also set the Mets’ record for most home runs in a single season by becoming the first player to reach 50 or more in a single season.

Alonso and his brother Alex, a lacrosse player for Queen’s University of Charlotte, were born in Tampa, Florida to parents Peter Matthew Alonso and Michelle Lynn Alonso (née Morgan), a “former college softball player at Ohio Wesleyan University, who would drive young Pete to his games.”

Peter Matthew Alonso is the son of Catalan refugees who fled Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War and moved to Queens, New York before settling in Lancaster, Ohio.
