How many kids died in Aberfan?
Due to heavy rain that caused a buildup of water inside the tip, 116 children and 28 adults were murdered when the tip unexpectedly tumbled downhill as a slurry and engulfed Pantglas Junior School and a row of residences. The National Coal Board (NCB), which was in charge of the tip, was held accountable for the incident, along with nine specific employees, according to the investigation that followed.
About four miles (6 km) south of Merthyr Tydfil, Aberfan is located on the eastern slope of Mynydd Merthyr hill, towards the foot of the Taff Valley’s western valley slope. Aberfan was made up of two cottages and an inn that was frequented by local farmers and bargemen when the Merthyr Vale Colliery was sunk on August 23, 1869, by John Nixon and associates.
There were about 5,000 people living there in 1966, the majority of whom worked in the coal sector. The National Coal Board had been in charge of Aberfan’s colliery ever since the British coal industry was nationalized in 1947. (NCB).
