The ring name Cris Cyborg is used by Brazilian-American mixed martial artist Cristiane Justino Vencio, the current UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion. On July 9, 1985, in Curitiba, Brazil, Jurandir Justino and Cersima Gorete de Morais gave birth to Cristiane Justino Vencio. Her brother Rafael went to Chute Boxe Academy as well.

When she was nine years old, she started playing handball and eventually joined the handball team at her school. She occasionally trained with the male team. According to her mother, she was a very calm young girl who never stayed out late to the party.

In 2004, when Chute Boxe Academy’s founder and head coach, Rudimar Fedrigo, saw her playing in a high school handball championship game, he gave her a card so she could check out his gym.

She was initially apprehensive, but Fedrigo persuaded her to pursue an MMA career after being impressed by her power and athleticism.

On May 17, 2005, Cris Cyborg competed in her first mixed martial arts match, losing to Erica Paes through knee-bar submission in the Brazil-based Show Fight 2 promotion.

On November 20, 2005, at Storm Samurai 9, she won her maiden match by defeating Vanessa Porto. Over the course of the following year, she won three more matches in a row in the first round.
