The French electronic music duo Daft Punk was founded in 1993 and has two members. After coming from the French house music scene, they gained popularity in dance music and then in mainstream pop. They pretended to be recognized robots in public for fear of being caught on camera or overheard speaking. The robot helmets are a homage to the duo’s penchant for fusing retro disco and pop sounds with futuristic elements in their music.

Guy Manuel de Homem Christo and Thomas Bangalter first met while both were students at Paris, France’s Lycee Carnot. In 1992, they founded the guitar-based pop ensemble Darlin’ with Laurent Brancowitz. The name of the band was influenced by the Beach Boys’ song “Darlin.”

The ensemble only produced and released four songs. In a scathing review for the UK music magazine Melody Maker, the sound was referred to as “a daft punky thrash.” Shortly after, Darlin’ broke up, and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter started Daft Punk while Laurent Brancowitz went his own musical direction.

Following the success of their 1995 single “Da Funk,” which peaked at number one on the dance chart and the top 10 on the pop charts in both the UK and France, Daft Punk’s eagerly awaited first album Homework was released in 1997. The well-known song “Around the World,” which peaked at number 10 on several national charts, served as its foundation. Homework only made it to position 150 on the album list, whereas Da Funk and Around the World were both nominated for US Grammy Awards.
