He is the younger brother of footballer Eero Markkanen and the son of Finnish basketball players Pekka and Riikka Markkanen.
Markkanen spent his junior years playing for the HoNsU squad in Jyväskylä, where he was raised. From 2014 to 2016, Markkanen competed for HBA-Märsky in the second-tier league of Finland. Prior to the 2016–17 season, Markkanen verbally committed to NCAA Division I team Arizona Wildcats on October 17, 2015. On November 11, Lauri committed to going to Arizona.
