When Bumgarner was a student at South Caldwell High School in Hudson, North Carolina, he played baseball for both the school team and the Post 29 American Legion baseball club. At the time, he went by the name “Maddie”.

He guided his squad to a runner-up finish in the 4A State Championship during his junior season, compiling a 12-2 record, a 0.99 ERA, and 120 strikeouts in 84 innings thrown. He finished the following season with an 11-2 record, a 1.05 ERA, 143 strikeouts in 86 innings pitched, and his team won the state championship.

Madison was a pitcher with the San Francisco Giants from 2009 to 2019. Bumgarner won three World Series championships in 2010, 2012, and 2014 in addition to two Silver Slugger Awards. He also has the most strikeouts of any left-handed pitcher in Giants history and has been selected for four National League (NL) All-Star teams.
