Red Bull GmbH was created in 1984 by Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz and Thai businessman Chaleo Yoovidhya. In 1982, while working for the German business Blendax (which was subsequently bought by Procter & Gamble), Mateschitz flew to Thailand and met Chaleo, the proprietor of TC Pharmaceuticals.
He discovered that the energy drink Krating Daeng, created in the 1970s by Chaleo’s business, helped to alleviate his jet lag. After seeing the beverage’s business potential, he teamed with Chaleo to introduce it to Europe. Under the terms of their agreement, each partner contributed $500,000 to the formation of Red Bull GmbH.
