He was born in 1948 in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, South Africa. Ronge attended the University of the Witwatersrand and started his career in teaching right after at St.Johns College and later became a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand for ten years period.
Ronge came to be a journalist, he is notable for his column in Sunday Times, Split and Polish, his movie analyses and his Sunday night show on Radio 702.
Ronge was a journalist for Sunday Times for 27years, on February 23, 2014, he wrote his final column. He was named after Sunday Times Prize from South African Literature to Barry Ronge Fiction Prize in 2015.
Ronge died on July 3, 2022, in Johannesburg.
