Julius Malema, a Mopedi, was born and raised in Seshego, near Polokwane, Transvaal Province, now known as Limpopo. His mother was a domestic worker and a single parent. He joined the African National Congress’ Masupatsela at the age of nine or ten. His main responsibility at the time was to remove National Party posters. He is a South African politician and activist who is a Member of Parliament and the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Economic Freedom Fighters, a South African political party he founded in July 2013. From 2008 to 2012, he was the President of the African National Congress Youth League. Julius Malema was also a member of the African National Congress (ANC) from the age of nine until his expulsion from the party in April 2012, at the age of thirty-one. Julius rose to prominence as a supporter of ANC President and later South African President Jacob Zuma. Zuma and the Premier of Limpopo Province, Cassel Mathale, both referred to him as South Africa’s “future leader.” Portraits that are less flattering depict him.
