Nancy Patricia Pelosi is an American politician who has been the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives since 2019, previously served from 2007 to 2011. She has been a United States Representative representing California since 1987. Pelosi, a Democrat, is the only woman to have served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
Pelosi’s father, Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., was a renowned career politician and a member of the D’Alesandro political dynasty. She headed the California Democratic Party from 1981 to 1983, prior to her election to Congress. Pelosi was first elected to Congress in a special election in 1987, and she is now in her 18th term. She leads California’s congressional delegation. She represents the majority of San Francisco in California’s 12th congressional district. Initially, Pelosi represented the 5th district from 1987 to 1993, and then the 8th district after district borders were modified following the 1990 census (1993–2013). Pelosi has been the House Democratic leader since 2003. She is the first woman to lead a political party in Congress, having served as House Minority Leader (2003-2007 and 2011-2019) and House Speaker (2007-2011 and since 2019). Pelosi was a vocal opponent of both the Iraq War and the Bush administration’s proposal to partially privatize Social Security in 2005. Many of the Obama administration’s significant measures were passed during her first speakership, including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and the 2010 Tax Relief Act.
